What is a residence permit?
A residence permit is an official document granted to a person who is not a citizen of that country but wishes to reside there for more than a temporary period.
In Finland, if you are a person coming from outside the EU and want to stay in the country for more than 90 days, you need a residence permit. This permit is also essential in certain work situations, even if the stay is less than 90 days.
Applying for a residence permit is a personal process that requires submitting appropriate documents and often a personal interview. You cannot apply for a residence permit on behalf of another person, such as your spouse or employee.
The granting of a residence permit depends on several factors, such as the applicant’s home country, the purpose and duration of the planned stay in Finland, and the applicant’s financial situation. Each application is assessed individually, and the decision is also influenced by the applicant’s possible family ties in Finland.

Residence permit Finland application – How is it done?
Applying for a residence permit in Finland is a process that requires careful preparation and proper documentation.
The first step is to determine what type of residence permit you need. Different residence permits are aimed at workers, students, family members, or entrepreneurs. Each type of permit has its specific requirements and documents that must be submitted with the application.
The application process begins by filling out the application either online or at your chosen police station.
After completing the application, you need a passport photo. We at Tunnin Kuva take a suitable passport photo for your residence permit and automatically send it to the Police’s electronic system.
You will receive a photo code to include in your application.
Once you have a photo that meets the Police’s requirements and have completed the application, you must also pay the residence permit application fee.

Residence permit passport photo
The requirements for a passport photo in a residence permit application in Finland are precise and are applied equally to passports, ID cards, and residence permits. According to Police passport photo guidelines, the passport photo must meet certain technical and qualitative requirements based on EU legislation and international agreements. These guidelines are applied to all facial images used in documents issued by the Police.
The passport photo for the residence permit application must be in accordance with the Police’s guidelines.
Important aspects include that the face should not be too small in the photo and the photo should be taken directly from the front. Additionally, the expression must be neutral and the photo background monochrome and even.
Furthermore, it is important that the passport photo is recent – it must be no more than six months old.
These requirements ensure that the passport photo is clear and recognizable, which is essential when authorities process residence permit applications. It is important to ensure that the photo studio taking the passport photo is familiar with these requirements and can produce a photo accordingly.
The passport photo required with the application must be taken at an approved photo studio, ensuring the photo meets the authorities’ requirements.
We at Tunnin Kuva take new photos free of charge if the passport photo we take for some reason does not meet the authorities’ standards.
A poor-quality or incorrect passport photo can slow down the processing or lead to the rejection of the residence permit application.
Therefore, it is important to choose a photo studio familiar with the requirements of passport photography and capable of delivering a high-quality photo.
Residence permit price
We at Tunnin Kuva offer visa photos without an appointment, from any of our stores. All visa and passport photos cost the same amount, 28 euros.
The price includes a professionally taken photo according to requirements, and if necessary, a new photo shoot if the photo does not pass in the application. We automatically send the photos to the Police’s electronic system, and you also receive the photos by email or in print if you wish.
Note that in addition to the passport photo, you must also pay the residence permit application fee, which varies depending on whether the permit is applied for work, study, entrepreneurship, or other purposes.
For example, the processing fee for a first residence permit application in paper form is 520 euros and 470 euros electronically. The fees for a work-related residence permit are higher, especially if the application requires a partial decision.
The application is processed only after the processing fee has been paid. An application without a paid fee will be considered expired.
Exact amounts of processing fees and detailed information on different types of applications can be found on the Immigration Service website.
